Most of these papers were discovered in a cupboard in the School of Economic Studies in December 1976 and were presented to the Library through the good offices of Professor J. R. Crossley; a smaller quantity was subsequently discovered and presented in 1980. The papers mainly refer to chapters in the book, 'The coal-mining industry', jointly written by Professor Jones, Gwendoline Cartwright and Paul Herbert Guénault, and published in 1939.
John Harry Jones (1881-1973) was born in Wales and graduated at Cardiff in 1903. He subsequently studied at Leipzig and Berlin. He was an assistant lecturer at Liverpool and a lecturer at Glasgow before being appointed professor of economics at Leeds in 1919, a post which he held until his retirement in 1946. During the First World War he was employed in government service, especially in the Ministries of Munitions and of Labour. He served on a number of Royal Commissions and Boards, including the Nova Scotia Royal Commission of Economic Enquiry (1934), of which he was chairman.

Later he served on a number of Royal Commissions and Boards, notably the Nova Scotia Royal Commission of Economic Enquiry in 1934.
