Description

The letter is a request to Richard Hey from his father, William Hey, to procure a cadaver to be used for teaching anatomy at the Leeds General Infirmary. Richard was residing in Southwark, London, so was instructed to send the cadaver by coach to Leeds.

The original letter is accompanied by a typed transcript of the text; and also a typescript note about the letters' post marks, which 'are of philatelic interest', written by A.D. Kindley.

Kept alongside these papers is a separate envelope containing a printed copy of a stipple engraving of William Hey, by W. Holl, 1816, showing Leeds General Infirmary in the background. The portrait is loose with a card backing. 'Mr ?Frearne' is writtin in ink on the back of the portrait.

The letter, transcript and notepage were previously housed in a card folder, within a University of Leeds-branded brown envelope. The envelope has 'Letter from Wm Hey to his son Richard (1787)' typed on to the front.
