Features

Written in ink manuscript in French on a separate piece of paper and pasted to the verso of the second front flyleaf is a long note on the book and its author.


Occasional annotations in red and black ink manuscript in different hands, late fifteenth- to nineteenth-century.


Headlines supplied in black and red ink manuscript, cropped.


Major initials supplied and decorated in red.


Some paragraph markers and underlinings in red.


Bindings


Binding of full brown calfskin over wooden boards, restored and rebacked. Both the upper and lower covers are blind-tooled with a border, frame and panels of double and triple fillets. Inside the outer frame is a repeating design of stylised foliage. The same design appears around the central panel which is undecorated. The new spine has six raised bands. Gold-tooled in the second panel are the words: Galli Abb. Malogranatum. In the sixth panel is the Brotherton Collection stamp in gold. Gold-tooled at the base of the spine are the places and date: Eggesteyn. 1470. The leaf edges are coloured red. Size: 381 x 280mm. Leaf size: 366 x 267mm.

Book label on the recto of the first front flyleaf: From the library of George Dunn of Woolley Hall near Maidenhead.


Bookplate on the verso of the second front flyleaf: Ex libris Gerald E. Hart, Edwin Cox & Co., Montreal. This volume is listed as item 964 in the 1890 auction catalogue of Hart's library.


Coloured armorial bookplate of Sir Edward Allen Brotherton on the front pastedown. The book was most likely acquired before 17 June 1929 when Brotherton was created Baron Brotherton of Wakefield.


Beneath the text on the final leaf is a monogram drawn in red ink manuscript, late fifteenth-century, with the letters IT.


Capital strokes supplied in yellow throughout.
