Material relating to Irene Alice Mary Shipton, later Countess of Lauderdale (1900-1995) Married Revd Sir Alfred Sydney Frederick Maitland, 16th earl of Lauderdale, 1904-1968 on June 4 1940.

This collection includes a series of personal diaries, from the early to mid 1900s, photograph albums of family, friends and holidays. A series of watercolour sketchbooks, from 1970-1980, travel diaries, typescript books and articles by Ireme Shipton, printed publications by Irene Shipton and correspondence.

Biography or history

Irene Maitland nee Shipton was born May 1900, the third child of Revd Charles Percy Shipton MA, in Haroldstone, Pembroke, but spent her early years at Halsham Rectory in East Yorkshire.
She was an avid writer and kept a diary from her school days until she died in 1995, as well as wrote and published articles in well known magazines. She also wrote poems which she collected into two volumes and self published in the 1980s.
She married Reverend Alfred Sydney Maitland in 1940 and in 1953 he inherited the title Earl of Lauderdale styling Irene Maitland as Countess Lauderdale.

Provenance

This collection was passed on to us by Peter Liddle, as it was not wholly related to World War One, however Countess Lauderdales school-time diary remains in the Liddle collection. See associated records
