Bindings

Binding of quarter pale brown sheepskin and brown mottled paper over pasteboard. The smooth spine is gold-tooled with seven horizontal fillets to form panels. Gold-tooled in the second panel are the words: Eusebii de evangelica præparatio. Gold-tooled in the bottom panel are the place and date: Tarvisii 1480. The two panels with lettering have been coloured a darker shade of brown. The remaining four panels are blind-tooled with an ornament in the shape of a cross. At the base of the spine is a green paper library label printed with the number 16. Written in ink manuscript on the head-edge are the words: Euseb. Pamph. Evang. Prep. Size: 282 x 210mm. Leaf size: 278 x 204mm.

Provenance

Painted at the base of a4r is a coat of arms featuring three upright swords with grey hilts and red blades against a blue shield with a fleur-de-lys in gold above each hilt. There is a grey horizonal band across the sword blades. Scroll decoration in red extends from the top and sides of the shield.

At the base of a2r is a black circular library stamp: Biblioteca Magnani 1816. Città di Bologna. The book once formed part of the Biblioteca Magnani in Bologna, Italy, and probably came from the personal collection of Antonio Mangani which he bequeathed to the city in 1811.

Circular library label on the front pastedown with a number in black ink manuscript: 16. C.IV. 15.

Coloured armorial bookplate of Lord Brotherton on the front pastedown. The book was most likely acquired after 17 June 1929 when Sir Edward Allen Brotherton was created Baron Brotherton of Wakefield.
