Description
The collection relates to Shifra magazine. This was a publication running from 1984-1986 aimed towards Jewish women in Britain, encouraging individuals and communities to share experiences, art, poetry, recipes, and perspectives on modern and historical politics. The publication did not aim to reject Jewish women’s traditional values, rather it discussed ways in which these gendered roles could be modernised. Of particular interest is the magazine's focus on the experience of non-white and lesbian Jews. Marilyn Fletcher was one of 11 founding editors of Shifra, working alongside Bev Gold, Elizabeth Sarah, Francesca Klug, Jane Black, Leah Ruth, Lilly Lawson, Linda Bellos, Riva Krut, Scarlet Pollock, and Sheila Saunders. The women lived in cities across the UK but met frequently to discuss the magazine.
The collection is comprised of; lists of original work submitted to be published in the magazine; various manuscripts submitted to the magazine, including poetry, personal essays, academic writings, memoirs, and recipes; published magazines; letters and leaflets containing donation and subscription information; introductory letters to the magazine detailing its aims, policies, and background; correspondence regarding editorial meetings; correspondence from readers; correspondence from advertisers; a photo album depicting the 11 Shifra editors.
