Description
The collection consists of about 15,000 coins and medals ranging from classical to modern also included are trade and town tokens. The collection has particular strengths in the Classical period and seventeenth-century Yorkshire tokens.
The collection has been formed on several core collections - the 18th century Winchester Cabinet, the Anonymous Gift and the Thackray Collection
History of the Coin Collection
1918: teaching collection of Roman bronze and silver coins held by Department of Latin
1949: Roman coin collection donated by Yorkshire Archaeological Society
1954: Winchester Cabinet purchased from the Dean and Chapter of Winchester Cathedral.
1950s: acquisition of the Paros hoard, over 250 Roman coins mainly from the reigns of Severus Alexander, Gordian III and Philip I.
1957: The Anonymous Gift - a donation of over 1,000 coins from Alderman Horace Hird of Bradford.
1990-1994 - The Anonymous Gift - a donation of over 1,000 coins from Alderman Horace Hird of Bradford. The gift included coins ranging from the Iron Age to William IV and had been chosen to fill gaps in the existing collection. It also included a notable selection of seventeenth-century tokens relating to Yorkshire and Derbyshire.
