Description

(1900-) (Tape 760/Summary). Driver, Royal Field Artillery/ Private, 2nd/14th Battalion, Yorks & Lancs Regiment (Barnsley Pals)/ Royal Fusiliers Regiment; Enlisted under age in the RFA but deserted to join the 'Pals'; Describes the training undertaken prior to embarking to Egypt; Later to France where they eventually arrived on the Somme Front being located between Serre and Gommecourt; Describes, in detail, the events of the attack on July 1st 1916, where he was wounded in No Mans Land and his eventual escape back to his own lines; Discharged from Army when they discovered his age but rejoined in 1918 , Royal Fusiliers, serving in N Russia, mentioning Obozerskaya and Vologda.
