Biography or history

William Paley Baildon (1859-1925) was born in Staffordshire, the second son of Joseph Baildon of Newcastle-under-Lyme. Baildon studied law and was called to the Bar in 1885. He attained a high reputation as a Chancery barrister and draughtsman, having few equals as a conveyancer. Baildon, however, turned his interest to antiquarian research and it was in the study of national muniments that he found full scope for his talents.

Wide as were his antiquarian interests, it was to Yorkshire that Baildon devoted the chief part of his labours. His zeal found expression in "Baildon and the Baildons" a work of extraordinary interest, based entirely upon personal research. He was a contributor to both the YAS's Journal and Record Series and worked with J W Clay on the editing of two Wakefield court rolls. For the Thoresby Society he was joint editor of the Calverly Charters and Kirkstall Coucher Book.

In 1892 Baildon was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London, in whose work he took a very prominent share. He was for many years on the Council and was Vice-President at the time of his death. He bequeathed to Bradford Library his splendid collection of manuscripts, the result of his lifetime's work among public and private records.
