Description
Comprising a volume of correspondence and papers relating to the Record Commission and its publications. Included are notes by Hunter of the proceedings of the Record Commission, 1800-1803, drafts of a letter by Hunter to (? Mr.... Devon) regarding the print of the Chancellor's Roll of 1201-1202 published by the old Record Commission. Also letters from Sir Henry Ellis and E Protheroe and a copy of a letter from John G Lockhart, declining an article by Hunter on the Records for the Quarterly Review
Biography or history
Joseph Hunter (1783-1861) was an antiquary and record scholar. He was born in Sheffield, the son of a cutler. He was trained as a cutler, but went on to train as a Presbyterian minister. Despite living in Bath and London he remained interested in studying the history of Yorkshire and published 'Hallamshire: the history and topography of the parish of Sheffield' and 'South Yorkshire' (a history of the deanery of Doncaster).
