Features
Bindings
Nineteenth-century French binding of full red goatskin over pasteboard by Capé, whose name is gold-tooled on the turn-in beneath the front pastedown. The upper and lower covers are blind-tooled with an identical pattern comprising a border of double fillets, a frame containing stylised foliage with fleurons at each corner, and a central ornament of fleurons and stylised foliage inside which is gold-tooled the word: Pavlatim. The spine has six raised bands. Gold-tooled in the second panel are the words: La Divina Comedia di Dante. Gold-tooled in the third panel are the words: Vinegia. Scoto da Monza 1484. Each of the other five panels is blind-tooled with a frame containing the same stylised foliage tool used in the design on the covers, but with a small rose at each of the corners. The pastedowns are of marbled paper featuring the comb pattern in dark red, orange, green, blue and cream. The turn-ins are gold-tooled with a dentelle design. The book has gilt edges and a red, green and
white striped silk ribbon register. The book is preserved in a cardboard slipcase covered with brown mottled paper. Size: 334 x 245mm. Leaf size: 326 x 230mm.
Provenance
Coloured armorial bookplate of Sir Edward Allen Brotherton on the front pastedown. The book was most likely acquired before 17 June 1929 when Brotherton was created Baron Brotherton of Wakefield.
