Biography or history
The 'Calton deeds' were extensively used by J W Morkhill in his 'Parish of Kirkby Malhamdale' (1933) where many are translated. They were called the 'Calton deeds' by Morkhill to distinguish them from the 'Malham Tarn deeds' from which they were separated when the former Lambert estates were split up in 1785.
These 'Calton deeds' were part of the archives of the Lister family, Barons Ribblesdale, and were calendared by Mrs Blanche Tempest c1903 together with deeds relating to Gisburn, Swinden, Twiston, Oldham and Horton in Craven, and material relating to the Lister family. These documents are now part of the Bradfer-Lawrence collection (MD335) at the YAS. Mrs Tempest's calendar conatins a letter from Morkhill dated 24 Feb 1909 acknowledging receipt of the 'Calton deeds' on loan. These subsequently remained with the Morkhill family papers at the offoces fo Charlesworth, Wood and Brown, solicitors, Skipton, where they were listed by the National Register of Archives in May 1965. A few further Calton deeds were added to Mrs Tempest's list subsequent to her first arrangement of the deeds. these were not borrowed by Morkhill, but remained with the main collection (now MD335). The present arrangement of the deeds follows that made by the NRA in 1965. Mrs Tempest's references are given at the end
of each entry.
