Bindings
Late eighteenth-century French binding of full mottled calf over pasteboard. The spine is smooth and decorated with eight horizonal bands of gold-tooled triple fillets. In the second panel is a pared red leather lettering piece on which are gold-tooled the words: Epistolar M. Tullii Ciceronis. The pastedowns are of marbled paper featuring the spot pattern in yellow, green, blue and red. The leaf edges are coloured red. Watermarks on the front and back flyleaves featuring a sceptre with two circles beneath, the first containing a heart, and a motif (possibly a hand) at either side. Beneath, the word Fin and the date 1790. Size: 305 x 217mm. Leaf size: 297 x 200mm.
Provenance
Written in black ink manuscript on the title page: [...] de Colegio de la Comp[añi]a de Jhs de Bilbao. This book once belonged to the Jesuit college in Bilbao.
Coloured armorial bookplate of Sir Edward Allen Brotherton on the front pastedown. The book was most likely acquired before 17 June 1929 when Brotherton was created Baron Brotherton of Wakefield.
