GREEN, Arthur G (Prof.)


Arthur Green was born in 1864 in Ealing and was educated at Lancing College and University College London. In 1885 he became a research chemist with Messrs Brooke, Simpson & Spiller, Ltd. In 1894 he became the manager to the Clayton Aniline Co Ltd. In 1901 he set up in London as a consultant but in 1903 he accepted the invitation to the chair of Tinctorial Chemistry and Dyeing in the University of Leeds, made vacant by the death of Professor J J Hummel. He resigned his post in 1916 and became director of research to Levinstein Ltd, Manchester. During this time with the help of F M Rowe, one of his past students, he established the Dyestuffs Research Laboratory, at the School of Technology, Manchester. In 1923 he resigned as director of research and returned to his private practice but in 1936 he became a consultant to the Dyestuffs Group of Imperial Chemical Industries Ltd. He died on the 12th Sept 1941. Green received many recognitions of his work both to science and to industry, which are
detailed in his obituary notice and the paper written by his son-in-law K H Saunders.

Biography or history

Arthur Green was Professor of Tinctorial Chemistry and Dyeing in the University of Leeds from 1903 to 1916. Green received many recognitions of his work both to science and to industry, which are detailed in his obituary notice and the paper written by his son-in-law K H Saunders.
