Bindings
Early sixteenth-century French binding of blind-tooled dark brown calf over pasteboard. The leather may have been used previously on another binding. The upper and lower covers are blind-tooled with a panel design. There are two panels on each cover with a central design of stylised foliage surrounded by words in gothic script: ostende nobis Domine misericordiam tuam et salutare tuum da nobis. The smooth spine is blind-tooled with three double lines and one single line of stylised foliage. Gold-tooled at the head of the spine are the words: S. Brulefer. Opuscula. Gold-tooled at the base of the spine are the place and date: Paris 1500. There are the remains of two ties on the edge of the covers. The number 25 is written in ink manuscript on the fore-edge. The pastedowns and endpapers have been replaced. Size: 134 x 95mm. Leaf size: 129 x 90mm.
Provenance
Small black and white armorial bookplate of Sir Edward Allen Brotherton on the front pastedown. The book was most likely acquired before 17 June 1929 when Brotherton was created Baron Brotherton of Wakefield.
