[Collector announcement]; John Graham, recorded at home in Abbeytown; describes the game of penny pitching, the equipment used, competitions and prize money, practising at night, locations of the game; describes pitch and toss game; boyhood dares; playing football with a tin; whip and top spinning season (Spring, when the roads are dry); pranks - button touch [window tapping]; thoughts on the younger generation in the village; working hours/days on the farm; informant's work as a builder (mainly on farms); movement of people away from the village, to work in Carlisle and at an aerodrome in Silloth; talk of farm sizes and mixed farming in the area. [Collector announcement]; Len Huddart, recorded at home in Abbeytown; talks about amateur sprint races (under-sixteen, for prizes, over sixteen for money) in Cumberland and Westmorland - handicap races at Keswick Gala, Workington, Carlisle and Armathwaite (also in the south of Scotland); full-time, semi-professional runners from Scotland; the Morpeth Sprint; invitation races at Keswick; names runners and where they were from; fell racing at Keswick; running surfaces and training; describes Keswick Gala, including Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling events, and cycling (ceased c. ten years ago); more on wrestling, with recollections of all-day events at Grasmere, due to the number of entries; local wrestlers; the decline of the bowling club and recollections of matches in the area; local football and cricket clubs; travelling to bowls matches.
