Frank Corton, recorded in Newport [niece and wife also present]; talks about his work as a crane operator in Newport Docks; emptying/banking iron ore from ships; lists jobs on leaving school; describes his first day of work at the docks, aged fifteen; tipping iron ore; use of (hydraulic) grabs and the time taken to empty a ship; modern electric grabs and the amount emptied; decline in the numbers of men employed; employers, work situation, wages; the Dock Labour Board; the General Strike of 1926; wife talks about family and child-rearing; neighbourliness (past/present); the dole and the Means Test; inconsistency of employment situation and job security; football; refereeing baseball matches; length of dock service; sufferance money on retirement; pension; describes shovelling ore from the corners of a hold, for the grab to reach; pub/club singing; working hours; labour relations; working conditions; shovelling ore; thoughts on life; wife's work at the docks in the General Office.
