[Collector announcement]; Ernest Warren, recorded [outside] in Ponsworthy; talks about the recent snowfall; farming (crops, cream/buttermaking); his first job milling flour and driving a horse and cart; school; farm work after serving during World War One; agricultural labourers' wages, pre-war (and privileges - potatoes, butter); self sufficiency; peat cutting (for fuel); baking in a hearth fire - describes the use of a crock (iron) for cooking; family; local roads and repairs; ponies - selling them at [South] Brent Fair; grazing on Dartmoor; pony prices. [Tr. 8]
[Collector announcement]; John Reep, recorded outside in Peter Tavy; talks about farming and his stock farm (cattle, sheep, ponies); his father farming Scottish sheep in 1905; milking; describes the process and equipment used in producing clotted cream; cattle breeding; the selling of sheep in September/October - younger sold for pasture in Somerset; wool production - wool sold to Taunton, and processed in Halifax; ponies - some bought for work in mines; (cross) breeding; pony ear marks, rather than branding; number of ponies on Dartmoor; describes the arrangement of the parish commons and the rights to graze stock (by day, not night); describes the division of Dartmoor Forest and the sub-letting of certain portions; the payment of a mortmain for the right to night rest (grazing by night).
