Ernest Packer, recorded in Ashton Keynes [continued from tape LAVC/SRE/A796r]; talks about hedging and ditching, related terminology and tools used; his father's speech; the price of beer/ale; a brewery in Cirencester; his father's job as a stonemason; women's involvement in the harvest; threshing, using a traction engine; working with oxen; practical joke; answers questions from the Dieth-Orton Questionnaire on birds and insects [Orton questions]; plus questions re. types of light, chapped hands, rings, left-handed and boils. [Tr. 5]
William Orchard and William Tyler, recorded in Sutton Benger by John Wright and Henk Kylstra in 1960 [possibly part of the interview undertaken on the 6 August 1960 and recorded on tape LAVC/SRE/A794r]. Checking Survey of English Dialects responses, recorded in writing in 1957 by John Wright. The informants talk about terms for mallets and sledgehammers, ladders, potatoes, corn, horse feed, barley, hay, hay/corn ricks, straw, male pigs, swollen rivers and waterlogged land; domestic fowl, domestic interiors and lighting, soot, beastings (first milk); talk of service during World War One; overseas farm workers; the price of beer and tobacco/cigarettes; terms for baldness, teeth and gums, chapped hands (and traditional treatment for); terms for numbers and quantities, female sheep, family members, the verbs to lose, to be sure and to wash.
