Description
William Blake, recorded in Hambledon by Henk Kylstra; talks about his work as a shepherd during the years 1919-1958; the village of Hambledon past and present; schooling; work as a shepherd boy on leaving school; father from Wiltshire; sheep names (ewe, lamb, teg); pig killing and bacon; cow and pig names; discusses the variation in animal names between counties; grass cutting; the scythe and its parts; serving with the Army from 1905, in India when World War One started; war experience and wounds; shepherding after the war; treating sheep ailments; sheep shearing; shearing teams. George Smith, recorded in Oakley in April 1961by Henk Kylstra; names the parts of a scythe; other agricultural implements; pigs and parts used for food [wife contributes]; wages and the cost of living; thoughts on the old days; thatching ricks; the cost of thatching cottage roofs; thoughts on the decline in the supply of agricultural labour; schooling; ferrets [wife contributes].
