Description

Mr. H. Evett , recorded in Brompton Regis; talks about farm work; time started each day; working with horses; hours of work and wages; tools for hedging; also present is a Mr. A. Gibbs, who talks about starting work at the age of eleven, driving horses; lambing; Mr. Evett on hedge laying technique; Mr. Gibbs on ploughing with horses; acres/miles walked; mowing grass with scythes (describes the scythe parts and gives names); changes in the village and farming practices; holidays on New Year's Day and Old Christmas Day (January 6th); fairs; hunting; thatching; rope making; tending bullocks; sheep shearing; working for Somerset County Council, road mending (Mr. Evett); Mr. Gibbs talks about sheep marks; cider making/drinking; the village's pubs. Ernest Bowhay, recorded in Blackawton; describes a working day on the farm; hoeing mangel-wurzles; harvesting hay in June; dung carting; lambing; ploughing with horses; horse breaking; milking as a boy aged twelve; old ploughs; tractors; hours of work; drinking; changes in the village; football; social dances; Blackawton (agricultural) Show in June; working at Christmas; hedging and hedging tools; agricultural labourers' pay; ploughing; milking by hand.
