Description
William Brothwell and Florence Greenwood, recorded in Wragby in April 1960; talk about foxes and shooting them; Mr. Brothwell's farming career; setting a field for ploughing; livestock; thatching and stacking; animal husbandry; calving; working for his father; hiring farm labour at Lincoln and Market Rasen, and the wearing of certain items to denote which job was wanted (e.g. a black cloth cap); thoughts on growing sugar beet; discuss the tape recording; jobs for farm lads; farm horses; the weather; the winter of 1947; pig rearing. Frank Lovatt, recorded in Yoxford in July 1959; talks about harvest time; cutting corn by hand, followed by a man binding; difficulties when the crop is laying; machinery and the time taken to harvest; labour shortage; wages as a young man; hours worked and wages during harvest time; first job on leaving school.
