Description
'Singing the Fishing', the third of eight radio ballads transmitted by the BBC Home Service between July 1958 and April 1964. This programme was produced by Charles Parker, written by Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger and broadcast on the 16 August 1960. It is a documentary about the herring-fishing industry, incorporating folk songs and actuality recorded amongst fishermen in East Anglia and north-east Scotland (in particular Sam Larner of Winterton-on-Sea and Ronnie Balls of Great Yarmouth). The subjects covered include bad years and glut (including a poem recited by one informant), the collapse of the herring trade, the post-World War Two situation, fishing in the Moray Firth, changes in herring fishing post-war, working on a herring boat, home life (including the thoughts of fishermen's wives), thoughts on going to sea and being a fisherman; [announcement - programme title, names of writers and musical director].
The programme also features contributions from George Stephens, A. L. Lloyd, Elizabeth Stewart, Jane Stewart, Ian Campbell, John Clarence, Lewis Cardno, James Burnett, George Draper, Frank West, Jim Bray, Fitzroy Coleman (guitar), Alf Edwards (concertina & ocarina), Kay Graham (fiddle), Peggy Seeger (banjo, guitar, mandolin & auto-harp) and Bruce Turner (clarinet and alto sax).
