Description

Compilation of Survey of English Dialects fieldwork recordings (copies) from Lancashire locations 5La11-12 and North Yorkshire locations 6Y1-2. The original recordings were made between November 1952 and April 1955. The date when this copy tape was made is not known.


[Collector announcement]; Tom Halton, retired mill hand and miner, recorded in Eccleston; talks about pits and mining; the mechanisation of coal extraction; maintenance of pit props; his grandfather; Preston Guild. [Tr. 10]


[Collector announcement]; Polly Morris, recorded in her home in Harwood, relates an incident concerning the Sexton of Harwood church digging a grave; and anecdotes about a ghost sighting, and a woman and an umbrella. [Tr. 11]


[Collector announcement]; Jack Benson, retired quarryman and farmer, recorded in his home in Melsonby; relates an anecdote concerning a visit to a local pub, viewing two ?turnips and later winning a sweep by correctly guessing their length. [Tr. 12]


[Collector announcement]; Charles Armstrong, a retired farmer, recorded at home in Stokesley; talks about his work as a farmer; describes making a corn stack; compares farming past and present; the use and care of horses; working hours; milking cows by hand; the milk round; calving cows. [Tr. 13]
