[Collector announcement]; Harold Orton delivers the Dearness Memorial Lecture at the University of Western Ontario in London; introduction, including reference to John Dearness and the establishment of the lecture series in his name; Orton continues with talk of spelling reform in English (history, development of an orthographic system); the Survey of English Dialects (English Dialect Survey) - history, aims, the concept of a linguistic atlas; Alexander Ellis' dialect survey; shows slides to illustrate the mapping of notions; choosing SED informants; method of investigation; the Questionnaire; fieldworkers; drafting and redrafting of the Questionnaire; the range and form of the questions; fieldworkers and the network of localities; fieldwork method; publication programme; shows slides to illustrate his talk of the Questionnaire; reference to Incidental Material; gives examples of grammar; discusses a page from a Questionnaire Response Book for a location in Norfolk; discusses a number of
responses to Survey questions.
Harold Orton continues to give examples of Survey responses; introduces a number of dialect sound recordings, and describes their content; plays the recordings; stresses the importance of continued English dialect investigations, and unscripted recordings.
