Description
Male Maori informant, recorded in Gisborne, New Zealand; tells a story of a fishing trip and a charm spoken to bring on a storm [continued from tape LAVC/SRE/A661r]; talk of Maori spells known by the informant, who chants part of one; discussion of Maori song - qualities, performance, context, audience, what makes a good/bad performance, getting the words/tune right, vocal qualities, learning and completing songs, memorisation; song composition for occasions/special visitors - explains the composition process, choice of words, use of formulae phrases (text); borrowing traditional phrases for other songs; oral transmission; informant's family and his interest in genealogy.
Informant continues to talk about family history; Maori tribes and ancestors; Maori bards, composers of songs, high ranking, respected, religious teacher; roles within Maori tribes, learning jobs, class distinctions; informant's jobs within the tribe; interest in Maori traditions and language; role of the Tohunga [Maori priest], communing with Maori God; relates a legend concerning a woman and the moon; story of a carver's dream and learning the art of carving; Maori musical instruments (flute); longest song known to informant; recites the song in Maori (with translation).
