Male Maori informant, recorded in Gisborne, New Zealand; talks about a female tribal composer, black magic, Maori laments, oral tradition, songs and singing competitions, Maori language, types of song and occasions when they are sung, singing style, learning songs. [Tr. 1]
Male continues to talk about Maori song and singing, terminology relating to music/song, Maori hospitality, challenges; the haka and use of words and actions; informant's own experience of learning the haka; the Gospel and the decline of black magic; Maori lullabies; names four kinds of Maori song; beliefs relating to the planting of crops; traditional method of planting; tells a story of a fishing trip and a charm spoken to bring on a storm.
