Male Maori informant, recorded in Gisborne, New Zealand; talks about black magic, song composition, laments, song collection, memorisation, inheritance of song, Maori ancestors and Maori god, teaching and learning, philosophy, traditions and beliefs, chants, funerals, chants/songs/laments to gods, belief in signs and the interpretation of these, characteristics of Maori song [informant chants samples and explains their meaning], fairy beliefs and fairy song [informant sings an example].
Informant relates a story of a Maori Chief and a fairy visitation; fairy belief and an example re. fishing nets; informant sings song fragment; Maori orators; haka teams; fairy song and Maori chant interpretation [recites lines and gives explanation]; memorisation and composition of Maori song; tribal composer [informant recites lines and interprets them]; dirge song; singing style; interpretation of song, how composed and story on which the song is based.
