Description

Male Maori informant, recorded on 20th May 1973 in Gisborne, New Zealand; introduces himself and the collector, and describes the circumstances of their meeting; talks about his own research into Maori traditions; learning Maori chants; assuming the correct stance for chanting; recites a chant and explains its meaning; Maori creation beliefs; describes a Maori ceremony with speeches and the importance placed on chanting; formation of the local Maori church; learning chants; Maori belief in spirits; story re. night time crayfishing; Maori blessings (always in running water) and knowledge of chants; chant relating to the great migration.


Informant explains the great migration chant (Maori mythology); canoe journey and the influence of Maori gods; recites the chant again and tells the story of a canoe arriving on land during migration; recites a chant re. the daughter of a Maori Chief who captained the canoe; relates episode from Maori history, with reference to Maori gods and inheritance of black magic [recorded in poem/song].
