Description

James Knights of Woodbridge [?recorded in 1968] talks about Suffolk and Norfolk men taking seasonal jobs in Burton upon Trent, in October after the harvest; describes work and conditions in the malthouse, turning and baking the malt; JK's singing and learning through his sister; lodgings in Burton; sings 'Curly Williams' and [unidentified]. [Tr. 1]


Hector Moore of Brandeston [?recorded in 1968] talks about life in the 1930s, and in particular recollects the Christmas of 1930 in Kettleburghand catching sparrows for Christmas dinner; also remembers a man and his children returning by foot from Burton, where the father had been working in a malthouse. [Tr. 2]
