Albert Baines [?wife also present; with male and female questioners], recorded in Ripon; describes his work as a wheelwright in Great Ayton and Stockton [?on Tees]; apprenticeship in Ripon, c. 1900; describes the carriage wheels made - wooden with rubber tyres; describes the manufacturing process - use of oak, boring, morticing by hand; names the parts of the wheel and the tools used; comments on ?lance wood for spokes; wheel rims and joining parts with dowels; affixing the spokes, using a gauge stick; putting on the iron tyre (hooping); setting the axle (describes two axle types); occupational language (no difference between Ripon and Stockton); describes making a barrow wheel; sizes of carriage wheels (dimensions) - Brougham, gig, cart; process of fitting the tyre - use of heat and water; making wheels for Sir Reginald Graham of Hutton Conyers; fitting spokes; comments on the decline of wheelwrighting, due to the rise of the car; working during World War One; talks about wheelwright's
