Description

Gus Smith, recorded at his farm in Midgley, talks about the Midgley Pace Egg Play, and the involvement of Sixth Formers from Calder High School; casting and the play's association with the school, planning and organisation, continuity of tradition, the pupils' interest in and knowledge of the play, the collection, costumes (and the care of), the significance of the coloured rosettes worn by certain characters, the hats and decoration, clogs, the play text (players' engagement with, and interpretation of), staging - use of space, the audience, the pupils' approaches to the play and the characters, the character Toss Pot, individuals' interpretations of the play's characters and their actions, status of the play in the school, the character St. George, the importance of fitness, the performance route, audiences (knowledge of the play, reactions), the weather and performances, performing beyond Midgley, the future of the play.


Gus Smith talks about slight differences between performances, and local press interest in the play.
