Description
Jack Tomes, recorded at the Cotswold House Hotel in Chipping Campden, talks about the Chipping Campden Mummers; their costume; performing the play for the film director, Richard Todd, in Broad Campden; knocking on doors and the element of surprise; anecdotes re. people's responses to the mummers; house visiting - not performed in pubs - on Christmas Eve, starting the week before on St. David's Night; refers to previous mummers, including his father, brothers, uncle and son; reference to a tape recording of a performance; JT and his sons now performing the play; describes a performance, the words and players' entrances; recites words and explains the props; his preference for stage performances; talks about the mummers' costumes, including paper streamers and their function; JT mumming since before World War Two; teaching his sons the roles; the financial incentive for youngsters; missing a year to ensure a better response the following year; financial aspect of mumming in the past -
unemployment at Christmas; describes Christmas past; the poaching by others of the mummers' song; describes the transmission of the play text, and his uncle writing the words out for a school performance; preservation of tradition, passing on to his sons; problems with outsiders performing the play (reference to the BBC).
