Description
Pub singing, recorded in the village of Haxey, before the playing of the Haxey Hood game, an inter-village contest held annually between Haxey and Westwoodside, and involving the players' attempt to move a leather cylinder (the Hood) to a pub in their village, via a human scrum known as the sway.
Assembled company sing 'Farmer's Boy'; snippets of conversation re. the collector's tape recording; all sing 'John Barleycorn' [much crowd noise], 'Drink Old England Dry', 'Farmer's Boy'; conversation snippet re. the number of songs sung; all sing 'When the Saints Go Marching In' [chorus] and 'Drink Old England Dry'. The Fool's speech, made in front of the church in Haxey whilst he is smoked, followed by the Lord of the Hood's introduction starting the game on the field between the two villages. Also, sounds of the sway as the Hood is thrown. [Tr. 7]
