Description

Mr. T. Newman, recorded at home in Clanfield. Conclusion of session which starts on tape LAVC/SRE/A488r. Sings 'My Old 'at That I Got On', learned from a song sheet, and 'Needle Cases'[ fragment]; recites a Christmas mummers' play - speaks all the parts and describes the action - performed as a fifteen year old in ?, c. 1904; describes the costumes worn by the characters King George, Bold Slasher, Molly Tinker and the Doctor; sings 'I'll put on my hat and feather' [fragment] and 'Green Brooms' [fragment]; talks about his uncle in America; and rabbiting with ferrets; sings 'Old King Cole'. [Tr. 1]


Bill Whiting, recorded at home in Longcot; sings 'A Girl that Men Forgot', recites the words and sings a fragment of 'The Outlandish Knight'; discusses the song parody 'Bonny Banks of Longcot' [parody of 'The Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond']; sings 'Some of the Ghosts were Short' [fragment], 'Fifty Two Cards in the Pack' [fragment], 'I'm a chap that's done wrong to my parents' [fragment], 'Broken-Hearted Gentleman' , 'Green Grows the Laurel'.


Bill Whiting discusses the song 'The Jolly Herring', its words and tune - sings part; sings 'The Barley Mow' [fragment]; reference to 'The Tree in the Wood'; sings 'Green Brooms' [fragment], 'Farmer's Boy' [fragment], 'Bonny Banks of Longcot', 'It's all through the beer' [fragment], 'The Sailor's Farewell', 'How Ireland Got Its Name', 'Yip-aye-addie-aye-ay', a parody re. Crippen, 'The Old Mill at the Foot of the Hill' [fragment], 'Don't Go Down the Mine Dad' [fragment], 'Madam will you walk with me?' [fragment]; discusses a singer, [?Miss Engler], and her repertoire; also talk of Mrs. Russell; sings 'I've Got a Shilling'. [Tr. 2]

A written application to the Head of Special Collections, University of Leeds, is required. Access is permitted only within the Special Collections searchroom at the University of Leeds. No copy recordings or transcriptions whatsoever shall be made. A written application for publication, performance or re-recording/transcription of the item(s) (or parts thereof) should be made to the Head of Special Collections, University of Leeds. Applications will be considered on a one-to-one basis, in consultation with the collector, his family and/or descendants, and where possible with the family and/or descendants of the informant(s) recorded on this tape/in the transcription(s).
