Description

Harry Johnson, recorded at home in Standlake; sings 'I Stand on a Lonely Seashore', 'Meet Me by the Moonlight', 'Polly Perkins of Paddington Green' [fragment], 'The Two Beats the One', sung by informant's father at Bampton; sings 'I heard a Robin singing', 'You Can't Judge a Woman by her Clothing' [fragment]; recites an unidentified mummers' play (performed at Christmas by HJ as a fifteen year old, c. 1909) - describes the characters and props, lists the performers and the parts they played, describes the costumes worn; sings 'My Little Grey Home in the West' and 'I Come from the Country' [fragment]. [Tr. 5]


Mr. T. Newman, recorded at home in Clanfield; sings 'Sing Ovy and Sing Ivy'. [Tr. 6]; sings 'Here's Good Luck to all my Cocks and Hens', 'Farmer's Boy' [parody, cumulative animal noise version], 'The Tree in the Wood' [cumulative song], learned whilst in Birmingham for cattle sales; talks about his birthplace, family, his father's singing, and playing in Kempsford Band; sings 'Squeeze Me Joe', learned from his brother; talks about song sheets; sings 'Joe Muggins' [fragment] and 'The Cottage on the Hill'; names the places where he has lived. Access

A written application to the Head of Special Collections, University of Leeds, is required. This should identify clearly the research for which access to the sound recording(s) and/or any transcription(s) of both texts and music is requested. Access is permitted only within the Special Collections searchroom at the University of Leeds. No copy recordings or transcriptions whatsoever shall be made. Permission will normally be given for bona fide research purposes only and not for commercial use of any kind.

A written application for publication, performance or re-recording/transcription of the item(s) (or parts thereof) should be made to the Head of Special Collections, University of Leeds. Applications will be considered on a one-to-one basis, in consultation with the collector, his family and/or descendants, and where possible with the family and/or descendants of the informant(s) recorded on this tape/in the transcription(s). Permission will normally be given for bona fide research purposes only and not for commercial use of any kind.
