Description
[Collector announcement]; John White, recorded at home in Ugthorpe; sings fragment of 'Her Own Boy Jack'; talks about the game of quoits - trophies, league, weight of quoit, young players, rules and scoring, technique, good players, JW first playing aged eleven or twelve, encouraging young players, two Ugthorpe teams, encouraging young people to stay in the village, handicaps, trophy match and Quoits Supper, Ugthorpe Quoits Club and personnel; organisation of post-match singing; grandmother's musical ability; sings part of 'Her Own Boy Jack', and recites the words of other verses; sings part of 'Won't You Buy My Pretty Flowers', learned from his mother; plays a tape recording made at a Quoits Supper - songs include 'Betsy Baker', 'My Grandfather's Clock', and other unidentified songs (one of the singers is JW's father).
JW talks more about playing quoits - local league, strength of the game in the area, young players, Ugthorpe teams, matches, scoring, the quoits season, cups, Danby and District Quoits League, league winners; sings 'A Boy's Best Friend is His Mother' and 'The Northern Lights'.
