Description
George Ellerby, recorded outside his home, Forest Lodge Farm, in Castleton; talks about the collector's research and his moving to Whitby; GE's schooling in Castleton, including singing; comments on his singing voice, and refers to Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra; remembering songs; fiddle playing - fiddle given to GE by Frank Weatherill; collector explains his research; GE talks about farm machinery and the farm's power generator; remembering songs; John Willie, character used in his songs; discuss recording/playback equipment; John Willie series of seventeen songs, written by GE; unscrupulous recording and re-publication of songs by unidentified people.
GE talks about his song, 'Muckspreader', and the sources of subjects for the songs he writes; choice of tunes; composition with other local people, and the altering of words into Yorkshire language; remembering songs; writing songs for the local pub landlord; Willie and John Willie characters in his songs; pub singing in Guisborough and Redcar; sings a John Willie song, to the tune of 'Lonesome Cowboy'.
