Description
A recording made in George Belton's home in Birdham on the 4 May 1974, of a recording of him singing at Loughborough Folk Festival in 1973. His occasional comments, and the sound of his budgie, are audible whilst the tape is being recorded. He sings 'Barbara Allen', [unidentified], 'The Dark Eyed Sailor', 'The Lad in the Scotch Brigade', 'Don't Go Down the Mine Dad', 'To Sing a Good Song is a Difficult Task', 'Banks of the Sweet Primroses' and 'The Ship that Never Returned'.
Having completed this copy recording, the collector continues to record George Belton singing and talking. He sings 'If Those Lips Could Only Speak' and 'Hap'orth of Gold'; discusses his and his family's musical abilities; singers he admires; songs with different tunes; pub singing; singing at work (ploughing); reference to the Horsham singer, Bob Blake; sings 'Hang Me Please From My Favourite Tree', heard at Loughborough Folk Festival; discusses his version of 'Barbara Allen' (learned one version at school); sources of his songs - many learned from family.
