George Belton, recorded at home in Birdham (West Sussex) on the 4 May 1974; talks about his brothers and sisters and their occupations; his own working life on the farm; farming at Madehurst; the village; marriage; wife's family; farm work during World War One; in the Home Guard during World War Two; working with horses, working hours, living in; carters and waggoners; farm jobs and crops grown. Describes sing, say, or pay; singers in his family and learning songs from them; swapping songs with Cyril Phillips; discusses the song 'The Mixed Up Old Man', Sydney Carter and Horsham Folk Club; singing at work; singing at folk clubs, memorising words; favourite songs; audience responses; story in the song; bawdy songs (ref.
