[Collector announcement]; Mark Hornsey describes carnival (e.g. Blaydon) at which jazz bands would perform (in the 1930s); performing on a rostrum; band practices in a pub; modern bands compared with earlier bands; recruitment; subscriptions; uniform; kazoos; Rose and Vine band; age range (17/18 upwards); practicing in back yards; charabanc trip to carnivals; parade - prizes for best uniform, marches and playing (judges unseen, in a tent); raffles/forecasts (lottery); popularity; singsong and instruments in house after carnival - also drink, storytelling; organisation, Band Committee.
