Description

John Pearson and Belle Pearson, recorded 5 December 1973, talk about North East jazz bands: carnivals going through towns, including Ashington and Morpeth; age range of bands; band colours, mascots; the Byker Comrades; competitions; medal prizes; bands in Byker, Newcastle upon Tyne, colours, juvenile bands, uniforms; compare modern American-style majorette baton-twisting; competition rules (length of hair); numbers of Drum Major girls and boys; junior and senior bands; BP as a drum majorette; decline of bands during World War Two; revival; carnivals and Carnival Week described; local community spirit; hawkers' horses and wagons; band organisation - committees; local shopkeepers' donations for competition cups; band size; submarines (kazoos); band practises; fundraising events; repertoire; recreation as children; BP's band career with Byker Imperials - joined another as a Drum Major; band line up, with banner, described; uniforms; family involvement; drums; keeping in step.


BP sings songs sung/known by the Byker Comrades; competition wins and celebrations; results published in the Daily Chronicle; support from local community; origins of bands; formation of Kenton Magpies and running of the Harlequins; decline in band numbers; modern marching bands and differences with older bands.
