Description

George Metcalfe of Middlesmoor talks about Dead Mans Hill and the legend of a couple who robbed and murdered people on the pack trail, and buried them in the peat moorland where the bodies are preserved; a witch and shapeshifting into a hare; Pateley Bridge church organist; funeral food (ham); the 1745 Rebellion and the sound of horses' hooves.


Edward Stoney of Pateley Bridge relates a number of anecdotes. These concern a local preacher, a farmer cheated out of some hay, tar barrels used for Bonfire Night fire at Greenhow Hill; a man drinking paraffin.


Reverend Garnett Jones relates anecdotes concerning coffins, a church organist, supernatural presences, funeral teas and a woman who had prepared her own funeral, including cooking the ham.


George Rispin [GR] and Miss Brown talk about a man falling into a sugar barrel; Bouthwaite Hall; sheeps head broth; ?Toller's Gill; GR recites a poem about sugar and candy; talk of a black dog (ghost) and a boggart moving a picture. [Continues on tape LAVC/SRE/A244r].
