John Swales [JS], recorded in Merryfield Glen, sings I've got a father in the better land [first line]; Poor ?Jeffrey's gone to rest[first line], and other song fragments, including 'See Amid the Winter Snow'; anecdote re. grandfather poaching hares in Merryfield, brother poaching at Fell Beck - both frightened by a supernatural presence; witch doctor at Ripon; disappearance of shepherd on Pateley Moor; murdered woman buried in Hebden Wood; grandfather seeing a ghost; sightings of missing shepherd at Four Lane Ends; female [? Mrs. Calvert, John Swales' sister] relates ghost dog story; reference to boggarts in relations' dairy; ghost sighting in house that sister now lives in; JS starts the story of Dead Mans Hill; sings 'Poor Married Man'; ?Mrs. Calvert recites the words to and sings ?
