Description

Male informant talks about his father visiting a witch doctor at Ripon, and a cure involving a jar of nails taken from shoes; also refers to a ritual at a local church at midnight, and black cats. [Tr. 1]


Male informant talks about his grandfather setting nets to catch hares at night (poaching), and being approached by a mystery man on horseback. [Tr. 2]


Male informant talks about a bishoped rabbit - stuffed with straw to make it heavier for selling. [Tr. 3]


Male informant relates anecdotes involving the Bell family; selling dogs at Richmond market; buying a watch in Liverpool; the horse Stockton Maggie bought and resold at Appleby Fair; catching hares and seeing the Devil; preacher's sermon and congregational retort; horse sold at sale in Darlington returning to its original owner's farm.
