Jack Kay recorded in his home in Marsh Lane, talking about Norfolk Market in Sheffield and copies of song books (Rogers) seen on a stall there; reference to a Whitsuntide hymn sheet; informant's involvement in the Derby Tup play - describes the costume, the play and recites some of the words; reference to the Old Horse play (sings the chorus from this); talk of pub singing contests and local characters; sings 'Grand Old Oak'; reference to the poet Thomas Hood; childhood recollections of Christmas mummers - night performance, concertina accompaniment [in Marsh Lane, c. 1910/1920]. A pub singing session recorded in The George, Marsh Lane. Includes the singing of Arthur Turner, conversation with Roger Kay and an unidentified woman [Mary ?]. Roger Kay recites part of the 'Sheffield Ship Canal' and 'Poor Old Horse'; reference also to his brother Jack, and to Osbert Sitwell. Recorded 25 October 1970. [Tr. 3]
