Description
Mrs. Senior and Mrs. Woodhouse, recorded in Birdsedge; talk about their childhood games at schools in Denby Dale (West Yorkshire) and Tankersley (South Yorkshire). They discuss school dinners and drinks, pupil relations with teachers, playtime, Empire Day display at school (May 24th), maypole and morris dancing, nature walks. Also discuss various games, including both singing the words to 'King William', 'Poor Mary Sat A-Weeping' [recording level drops at this point], 'Old Roger', 'The Grand Old Duke of York' and 'Nuts in May'[recording level drops]. Talk of sewing and cookery [recording level drops], Mrs. W. leaving school at fourteen in 1922 - attended various schools, in Plymouth, Chesterfield, Stocksbridge and Thurlstone. Talk of Shrove Tuesday, the 1921 colliers' strike, pit pony racing on Tankersley Park; describes school classroom, skipping to school, skipping games 'All in Together', 'Higherin's and Lowerin's' and 'Pitch, Patch, Pepper'; skipping starting after Shrove Tuesday; going
to the pictures at Skelmanthorpe and Hoyland Common; describe ring games, 'Farmer's in his Den', counting-out ( 'Eeny Meeny' and 'Piggy Went to Market'), ball bouncing games; Sunday School picnics; both sing 'Kelly from the Isle of Man'; talk of Christmas [recording level drops - section inaudible], checks/potties/jacks; new clothes at Easter and Whitsuntide; School Attendance Officer; sing the tune to the ring game 'Wallflowers' and talk about the game 'I Had a Pigeon in My Pocket'.
