Description
Schoolgirls recorded at Birdsedge First School, Birdsedge, on the 23 November 1979; discussing the games they have learned from their teacher, and the clapping rhyme 'My Mother Told Me'. [Tr. 5]
Children, recorded in the playground, give the clapping games 'When Suzy was a Baby', 'Baker's Shop' and 'Chinese Restaurant'; the skipping rhyme 'All in Together'; the song 'Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush'; describe the games 'Farmer Farmer', 'Tally-O'[tig game], 'Poison'[chasing game]; the clapping rhyme 'My Mother Told Me'; parodies of 'Good King Wenceslas' and 'While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks by Night'; sing 'I'm Only a Poor Little Gymnast', 'Stille Nacht', and two other unidentified songs [both from a Christmas school concert]; recite the lines for 'Farmer Farmer'; explain the game 'Wolf Wolf' [What time is it?]; sing 'Farmer's in his Den'; sing/play and explain the circle game 'Lucy Locket Lost her Pocket'; sing the 'Hokey Cokey'; play and explain the circle game 'In and Out the Windows' and 'In and Out Those Dancing Bluebells' [intermittent wind noise around the microphone disrupts the quality of the recording]; sing/clap 'My Mother Said' [?with teacher/playground attendant]
and 'Oranges and Lemons'. Concludes with interview in the playground with playground attendant [originally from Rotherham]. Recorded 30 November 1979 and 6 December 1979[Tr. 6]
Children recorded in the playground sing 'Ring o' Roses' [with actions], with an additional verse recited by sisters originally from Wigan (and then sung by all the girls); sing part of 'Ten in the Bed'[usually sung on the bus], parody of 'Whole World in his Hand'; sing 'Ten Sticks of Dynamite' and 'Going on a Lion Hunt'[with explanation of actions and accompanying noises], 'Never Get to Heaven in a Playtex Bra'[parody], and 'The Wind Blows High'[part]. Recorded 7 December 1979 (?and 13 December 1979).
