Description
Witch post inside a building at the Ryedale Folk Museum, Hutton-le-Hole (North Yorkshire).
The witch post was a form of protection against witchcraft much used in dwelling houses in Yorkshire. The posts were wooden, and carved with designs which usually incorporated a cross. They were often placed on either side of a fireplace to prevent witches flying down the chimney.
Originally held in green slide cabinet, reference C93.
