Description

Ropemaker Herbert Marrison demonstrating the use of a tap, or big top (so called because of its shape) at Peak Cavern, Castleton, Derbyshire. The device is inserted in the cart (pictured in LAVC/PHO/S581) to control the twist of the rope and to keep it even. Hemp strands run along each groove, and with the broad end towards the wheel (pictured in LAVC/PHO/S580) the ropemaker can be assured that the rope forming behind him is properly balanced.

Originally held in green slide cabinet, reference B89.
